Two teams made news and only one of them made news on purpose. Green Bay got the item nobody wants. New York got the item you shrug at. Both tell you how rosters actually get built.
Start with Green Bay, because there is no spinning this one into good news and I am not going to try. Packers right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele is out for the 2026 season with a torn patellar tendon, and ESPN reports he is expected to be sidelined 8-10 months after knee surgery. He is set to undergo that surgery. Matt LaFleur addressed the injury in his press conference, which is what head coaches do when the player in question is not a spare part — and Bako-Bewele is not. ESPN considers him the team's best offensive lineman.
That is the fact set. Here is the take. Losing your best lineman for a season is not a next-man-up story. It is a who-are-we-now story. The protection scheme gets narrower, and whatever help the Packers were planning to send elsewhere now has to stay home. Where I do find something real: the timeline. The stated 8-10 month window runs past the end of this season, which means the surgery happens now, the rehab happens through the offseason, and Green Bay gets him back for the 2027 ramp instead of a mid-camp scramble. Season-ending injuries are awful. Season-ending injuries with a full offseason bolted to the back end are at least clean.
The other thing worth watching is the audition. Somebody in that tackle room is about to get a full season of snaps he was not going to get, and the Packers will know exactly what they have by January. That is not a silver lining. It is the only useful thing this injury produces, and they should treat it that way — as a full-season evaluation they did not ask for and cannot waste.
Now the Jets, and this one I will defend. New York signed former Titans starting quarterback Will Levis to the practice squad and released Bailey Zappe. Cost: nothing. Risk: nothing. Upside: a quarterback who has taken real NFL snaps is now in your building, learning your offense, on a deal you can walk away from any week.
The Zappe release is the tell. The Jets looked at their developmental quarterback room and decided Levis was the better lottery ticket. I think they are right. Levis has the arm and he has the starting experience; what he has never had is stability, and a practice squad is the lowest-pressure environment in the sport. If the starter stays healthy, this is a footnote nobody remembers. If he does not, the Jets have an emergency option who has actually been under center in a real game — which is more than most teams can say about the third quarterback on their depth chart.
So that is the day. Green Bay loses a pillar and gains a long look at its depth. New York spends nothing and buys optionality, and quietly upgrades the floor of its quarterback room. One team is coping. The other is shopping. In a league where the season is decided by who survives attrition, both are legitimate ways to spend a late-September afternoon — but only one of them chose to.
