Cam Skattebo nearly walked away from football. He said so himself. On Thursday's "Up & Adams Show," the Giants running back admitted he briefly contemplated retirement after suffering an open fracture of his right ankle during his 2025 rookie season.
That sounds like a sad story.
It isn't.
The only way an athlete mentions that kind of darkness is from the other side of it. Skattebo sat there, on air, and told the world that the injury made him question whether the game was worth it. Then he went back to work for the Giants. That is not a player who is broken. That is a player who knows exactly what it cost him to get here.
An open fracture of the ankle isn't a tweak. It's a violent, obvious reminder that football takes a physical toll. For a rookie, it's also a sudden identity check: everything you worked for, everything you told yourself about being an NFL player, gets interrupted by a leg that won't hold. So yeah, Skattebo thought about retiring. Who wouldn't after enduring that? The remarkable part is that he didn't. The thought came, and it left, and he stayed in the league.
What does that tell us about the Giants' running back? Plenty. It tells you he has already endured the lowest moment an NFL player can face, mentally and physically. He has confronted the question — is this worth my body, my future, my life? — and he answered it by being on that show as a current Giants running back. He chose to keep going. That's a decision that will carry him through contact, through setbacks, through time on the bench.
And being open about it helps, too. There's no shame in admitting you considered walking away. The shame would be pretending you never heard that thought and letting it eat at you later. Skattebo put the thought out in the open. Now it's behind him.
The Giants are getting a back who understands what he's playing for. He was hurt badly enough as a rookie that quitting crossed his mind. He's still here, and he's talking about it honestly. That's a player with real clarity.
Nobody will remember that he briefly thought about retiring. They'll remember that he didn't. That's the whole story.
