The foundation for the 2026 New York Giants season will begin to be laid in just a few weeks. Following the NFL's official release, the Giants have confirmed their voluntary offseason workout program dates, offering the first solid glimpse into the team's preparations under head coach John Harbaugh in his second year.

The nine-week program is designed to build training, teaching, and physical conditioning for Giants players. This period is critical for installing schemes, developing chemistry, and establishing the fitness baseline for training camp and the regular season ahead.

The offseason program is structured into three distinct phases, each with set rules on player-coach interactions and on-field activity.

Phase One: The Foundation (April 7 - April 20)

Unlike the previously reported April 20 start, the Giants will begin Phase One on Tuesday, April 7, as permitted for teams with new head coaches. This first two-week segment limits activities to strength and conditioning, rehabilitation, and classroom sessions with no footballs allowed on the field, except quarterbacks may throw to receivers in non-contact situations. This phase is about physical preparation and mental installation of concepts, crucial for newcomers learning the playbook and veterans easing into the workload.

Phase Two: On-Field Instruction (April 21 - June 5)

This longer mid-phase enables on-field, non-contact drills. Players receive individual instruction and practice "perfect play" drills, with offense versus defense alignment but no live contact or full-speed reps allowed. Coaches intensify technique corrections and install new plays. This phase forms the link between classroom study and on-field execution, essential for sharpening the team identity.

Phase Three: Organized Team Activities (OTAs)

The Giants will hold OTAs spread over multiple days between May 22 and June 9, with these sessions providing 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills without live contact. These represent the closest experience to actual season practice during the offseason. The OTAs allow the team to evaluate how offensive lines work together, how the secondary communicates in coverage, and other on-field dynamics.

The Culmination: Mandatory Veteran Minicamp (June 15-17)

The offseason culminates in the mandatory veteran minicamp held Tuesday through Thursday, June 15 to 17. Unlike earlier phases, attendance is compulsory for all players under contract. This session provides coaches with a full roster to assess before the long break ahead of training camp in late July.

For the Giants, this schedule marks the official start of Year Two in the John Harbaugh era. The 2025 season was a period of transition, with new offensive and defensive systems put in place alongside a new coaching philosophy. This offseason program is critical for refining those lessons and moving toward a more polished and cohesive team on both sides of the ball.

While Phase One and Two are voluntary, participation levels often indicate a team's culture and commitment. Leadership during classroom sessions and early arrivals for conditioning often correlate with team success. These early morning sessions are where the team culture begins to form, long before pads come on.

From a roster perspective, the offseason program provides a key evaluation window for head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen. For players on the roster bubble, these voluntary and mandatory workouts are prime chances to impress. Performing well in coverage, sharp route running, or displaying a strong grasp of the playbook during OTAs and minicamp can solidify a player's place in the 90-man training camp roster. Conversely, poor conditioning or lack of preparation can place a player in jeopardy.

The schedule also offers insight into the coaching staff's personnel strategy. How will key position workloads be shared? Are any players being cross-trained at other roles? Early non-contact practices like OTAs provide clues about depth chart outlooks and potential position battles for the upcoming season.

Though lacking the intensity of training camp, these offseason workouts are vital. They represent the blueprint phase of the football calendar. The concepts installed now become the team's common language. The relationships built in meetings and on the practice field translate into trust and teamwork under pressure. Physical conditioning in this period also helps reduce soft-tissue injuries in the grueling months to come.

For Giants fans, the announcement of these dates signals the official start of the 2026 season's journey. The NFL Draft still looms on the calendar, but the foundational work of building a competitive team begins, rep by rep, session by session starting April 7. The effort put in this spring under John Harbaugh's guidance lays the groundwork for a stronger, more competitive 2026 campaign.

As the Giants embark on this new chapter, the focus will be on growth, cohesion, and readiness. Every classroom discussion, every weightlifting session, and every perfectly executed route rehearsed on a sunny spring day in East Rutherford will count. The 2026 path officially begins now.
