Vic Fangio Puts Jalen Carter's Shoulder Concerns to Rest

For a few weeks this spring, a quiet unease settled over the Philadelphia Eagles fanbase. Every time a report surfaced about a defensive tackle, every time a depth chart speculation post went viral, one question kept bubbling up: What's the deal with Jalen Carter's shoulders?

On Tuesday, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio delivered the answer the faithful have been waiting for. And it was mercifully short and sweet.

"They're fine."

That was Fangio's blunt assessment of Carter's surgically repaired shoulders when asked about the star defensive tackle's health during a recent media availability session. The veteran coordinator didn't mince words or offer any caveats. According to Fangio, the 24-year-old disruptor is on track and ready to return to full participation when the team ramps up for training camp.

It's the kind of vague-but-reassuring update that doesn't make headlines on its own, but in the context of what Carter endured last season, it might be the most important news the Eagles have gotten all offseason.

A Late-Season Scare That Required Surgery

To understand why Fangio's comments carry so much weight, you have to revisit the end of the 2025 regular season. Carter, who had been putting together another dominant campaign in the middle of Philadelphia's defensive line, suddenly vanished from the field. He missed the final month of the regular season, a development that caught many by surprise.

The reason? Surgical procedures on both shoulders.

For a player whose game is built on violent hands, explosive upper-body power, and the ability to ragdoll offensive linemen as if they were practice dummies, bilateral shoulder surgery is the kind of injury that demands serious attention. Even routine arthroscopic procedures to clean up labrum or cartilage issues can sap a player of strength and mobility in the upper body for months. For a defensive tackle who needs to shed blocks and generate push against 320-pound guards, compromised shoulders are a direct threat to effectiveness.

Carter did return for the playoffs -- a gutty decision that spoke to his toughness and commitment to the team -- but he wasn't his usual self. He recorded just one tackle in the Divisional Round and was a non-factor against the run. The explosive first step and the vicious rip moves were still there in flashes, but the sustained power and finish weren't the same. It was clear he was playing through limitations.

That's why every offseason report about Carter's rehab progress has been a closely watched storyline in Philadelphia.

What Fangio's Statement Really Means

When Fangio says "they're fine," he's not just offering a medical opinion. He's telling the entire building -- and the fans -- that the defensive coaching staff isn't planning around Carter being limited. That means the defensive line install, scheme calls, and nickel packages are all being built around a fully operational Jalen Carter.

That's huge.

Because when Carter is right, he's one of the most disruptive defensive players in football. In 2024, before the shoulder issues began to nag him, Carter racked up 8.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and 28 quarterback hits while commanding double teams on a staggering percentage of snaps. He generated interior pressure at a rate that rivaled All-Pros like Chris Jones and Aaron Donald in their primes. He's the kind of player who makes everyone around him better -- Jordan Davis gets more single blocks, the edge rushers get cleaner paths to the quarterback, and the secondary benefits from quicker throws.

So the coaching staff, led by Fangio and head coach Nick Sirianni, can now proceed with their offseason plans without hesitation. The Eagles don't need to go out and sign a veteran insurance policy. They don't need to draft a defensive tackle early in 2027. They can trust that one of their foundational pillars will be healthy and ready.

A Defensive Line Built to Dominate

Assuming Carter is indeed fully recovered, the Eagles' defensive line remains one of the most talented units in the NFL. Carter and Jordan Davis form arguably the most physically imposing young interior duo in football. Behind them, veteran depth pieces like Byron Young, Moro Ojomo, and Gabe Hall provide rotational push that keeps everyone fresh.

On the edge, the Eagles have assembled a deep and versatile group. Brandon Graham is entering the final chapter of a Hall of Fame-caliber career, but he's still capable of delivering pressure in key spots. Nolan Smith Jr. has developed into an explosive pass rusher off the edge. Jalyx Hunt and Arnold Ebiketie offer speed and bend. And then there's the linebacker corps -- Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell, and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. -- that should clean up whatever the line doesn't get to first.

All of that potential, however, is tied to the fulcrum point of the defense: Jalen Carter. If he's healthy, the entire operation hums. If he's compromised, the dominoes start to fall.

That's why Fangio's two-word answer -- "They're fine" -- was music to the ears of defensive line coaches and staff who have been anxiously monitoring Carter's rehab.

What's Next for Carter and the Eagles

With minicamp and OTAs already in the rearview mirror, the Eagles are now in the quiet portion of the offseason calendar. Players are training on their own, rehabbing lingering issues, and preparing for the grind of training camp. For Carter, that likely means continued strength work to rebuild any lost muscle mass in his shoulders, along with gradual integration into full contact drills.

The Eagles will be cautious with him -- you don't rush a franchise player's recovery in May. But the fact that Fangio felt comfortable giving such a definitive, positive update suggests Carter is well ahead of schedule. If he's already cleared for football activities, he should be full-go by the time pads come on in late July.

For a team that has Super Bowl aspirations every season, that's exactly what you want to hear.

So breathe easy, Eagles fans. The shoulders are fine. The engine is revving. And Jalen Carter is ready to get back to doing what he does best: wrecking offensive game plans, one snap at a time.
