Two stories hit the wire Wednesday, and the louder one won't decide anything in January.

Philadelphia traded center Cam Jurgens to Baltimore for draft picks neither team saw fit to disclose. That's the tell. When a trade returns "undisclosed draft picks," it's usually because naming the round invites a grading session nobody in either building wants. The consensus will be that the Eagles sold low on a starting lineman or that they're quietly waving at the season. I don't buy either.

Here's the read that holds. Philadelphia does not trade an offensive lineman it believes it needs. Whatever those picks turn out to be, moving a starter in October is an admission the front office had already decided Jurgens wasn't part of the next version of this line, and that it would rather convert him into capital now than into a negotiation later. Teams that are punting don't make this trade. Teams that think they've already solved the position do.

Which brings us to Baltimore, and the part everyone will get wrong. The Ravens did not acquire a plug-and-play answer. Center is the one spot on the field where a new player has to learn a quarterback's cadence and a protection call sheet in the space of a week, and the guy snapping the ball is the guy making half the line calls. Adding one in October is a bet on the coaching staff as much as on the player. Baltimore's staff can handle that bet. It doesn't mean it pays off Sunday.

The tell to watch is the inactive list. If Jurgens is dressing immediately, the Ravens traded for a starter. If he's a healthy scratch for a week or two, they traded for insurance and the price was right.

Minnesota went the other direction on name value. Odell Beckham Jr. signed to the Vikings' practice squad, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, and could be elevated for Sunday.

Everybody will read that as the Vikings adding a receiver. They didn't. They added a tryout with a locker. If Minnesota believed Beckham could help this week, he'd have signed to the 53. The practice squad is how a team says it wants to see the guy move in person before committing a roster spot, and it keeps a Sunday elevation on the table without any guarantee the table gets used.

Don't dismiss the elevation talk, either. The Vikings floating that possibility means somebody in the building thinks there's something left. Other teams had the same chance to sign him and passed, and that's information too.

My verdict, and I'll wear it: Jurgens is Baltimore's starting center by the end of the month, and the Ravens get the better end of this trade no matter what the undisclosed picks become. On Beckham, give me the under. He'll take more snaps as a practice squad elevation this season than as a member of the 53, and I'd be surprised if that changes before December.
