Jalen Hurts isn't going to protect himself this time. The Eagles have handed him another new offense, and he's responding with a refusal to be careful. Sean Mannion, the latest coordinator to take over Philadelphia's scheme, is installing something Hurts calls "totally different" than anything he has run before. Hurts says he's "not afraid of making mistakes."

The Eagles lost several offensive coordinators over the first five years of Hurts' starting career. Mannion is the next name on the list, but the changes he's bringing go much deeper. Camp expectations point to an offense built around heavy pre-snap motion and play-action, with designed quarterback runs mixed in. That's a shift from the structured, hurry-up style Hurts has operated in for years.

Mannion wants aggression. More motion means more moving parts, more confusion for defenses, and more chances for something to go wrong. Hurts seems to welcome that. His comment about mistakes isn't a throwaway line. It's an acceptance of risk. For a quarterback known for taking care of the football, that's a notable change.

The upside is obvious. If Hurts can attack without hesitation, the Eagles' offense becomes harder to defend. The downside is also real. Early in camp, interceptions are part of the deal. Those will stick around into the regular season. But the alternative, the safe, conservative version of this offense, is what got the Eagles stuck in the first place.

My read is that this new version of Hurts is the right one. The aggressive approach will fuel both big plays and bad ones, but the net result should be a more dangerous Philadelphia team. Hurts has been careful for too long. Now he gets to see what happens when he isn't.
