Deshaun Watson's Coach Quincy Avery Loses Big Betting Against Belichick

Quincy Avery lost a large sum of currency.

Not a metaphor. Those are the words the quarterback coach used after betting against Bill Belichick and watching North Carolina beat TCU.

Avery, who trains Deshaun Watson, saw something in that matchup that told him Belichick's college venture would stumble. He bet against the Tar Heels. Belichick then led UNC to a stunning win, and Avery paid the price.

Avery's job is to teach quarterbacks to read defenses. The man he bet against is the one who spent decades confusing the best quarterbacks in the world. That is the irony, and also the entire lesson. The betting market looks at rosters, at recruiting rankings, at the names on the jerseys. Belichick's advantage is invisible on paper. It lives in the game plan.

Avery's quote, "Lost a Large Sum of Currency," is the sound of a professional realizing he got out-coached before kickoff. He looked at the teams, not the sideline. The sideline is why UNC won.

What would prove me wrong? A TCU blowout that shows the talent gap is too wide for any scheme to close. That didn't happen this time. But the season is long, and UNC is still building. If the Tar Heels get run off the field by an elite team, the sharp money will bet against them. Until that picture changes, the on-field coaching edge belongs to Belichick.

I'll take the coach who just made a professional quarterbacks coach eat his words. That is the edge. Bet it accordingly.
