Cowboys Don't Need Bobby Wagner. They Need to Admit What's Actually Broken.
CBS Sports has a solution for the Dallas defense: sign Bobby Wagner, who is a free agent. The case rests on two problems, defensive play and communication, and on the assumption that a veteran linebacker fixes both.
It's the most comfortable take in football. It's also the one least likely to be true.
Communication issues on defense are not a personnel problem. They're a scheme and teaching problem. Somebody has to make the call, somebody has to relay it, and eleven players have to be aligned before the snap. If that isn't happening in Dallas, the failure lives in the meeting room and on the headset, not in the linebacker depth chart. Wagner can't install a system he's learning himself. Every rep he spends absorbing the playbook in mid-September is a rep he isn't spending correcting somebody else's assignment. That's not a knock on him. It's arithmetic.
There's a second problem with the premise. The Cowboys sit at No. 8 in NFL.com's Week 1 power rankings. A team in the top ten entering the season isn't a crisis in need of a slogan. It's a team with a specific, diagnosable flaw, and CBS never says what it is. "Defensive woes" is a vibe, not a diagnosis. Is the issue linebacker speed? Run fits? Safety rotation? Tackling? Those are four different fixes. Only one of them is a free-agent linebacker.
And if Wagner were the cure for a communication crisis, he wouldn't still be available. Linebackers with that reputation get signed. That he's on the market as the season starts is the market's own evaluation, and the market has more film than any column does.
None of this means Dallas should ignore the position. If the linebacker room is genuinely thin, Wagner is a reasonable short-term body who won't need a learning curve on effort. Sign him for that reason, and say so. What I won't buy is the framing that a September signing repairs a structural problem. That's a press release, not a plan.
My call: Dallas doesn't sign him this month, and the communication issues get fixed in the film room or they don't get fixed at all. If Wagner does land in Arlington, it'll be because the linebackers can't tackle, which is a different article than the one CBS wrote.
