"Everyone's cleared," Dan Quinn said Friday, and the room nodded. It's true of the list he was asked about — and close to irrelevant to the injury that actually caps Washington's Week 1. The market hasn't reconciled it either: FanDuel has the Commanders at +4500 to win the Super Bowl, DraftKings at +6500.
"Cleared" is a volume hedge, not a health report
Pressed on whether Odafe Oweh had limitations, Quinn said: "No, we're gonna huddle up as a staff... with the medical guys." Then: "I'm definitely pleased with where he's at."
A player who is simply cleared doesn't need a staff-plus-medical summit the night before the opener. Quinn also volunteered the origin story — the goal six or seven weeks ago was to have everyone back for Week 1. That's a camp load-management plan landing on schedule, which is not the same as a full snap load. The "No" to limitations is a no with an asterisk.
Implication: Oweh is Washington's best edge, and the room behind him is old — Omenihu (8th year), Armstrong (9th), Wise (10th). If Oweh opens on a pitch count, the Commanders' sack ceiling in the opener drops, which nudges the pass game on the other side up and makes Washington's D/ST a streamer rather than a start. In IDP, start him; don't pay for a ceiling.
Tunsil's absence is the actual Week 1 story
The reporter said it flatly — "with losing Laramie" — and Quinn never disputed it. He talked about Josh Conerly Jr., about "Chris and Brandon... on the left side," and offered the most revealing line of the session: "The guards and the centers haven't had a lot."
He called the timing a "no silver lining with Laramie's injury," then described the consolation as practice time for the tackles and guards. Read the construction: the edges got reps, the interior didn't. With 2026 sixth-rounder Matt Gulbin at center, the center-guard exchange is the un-synced joint on the line.
Implication: Everything runs through Jayden Daniels (2025: 7 GP, 1,262 pass yds, 8 TD, 3 INT, 278 rush yds, 2 rush TD). Interior pressure is the one thing that erases a scrambling quarterback's edge — it closes the escape lane before it opens. Treat any rushing-yards over as a pass for the first month, and treat his passing volume as a Week 2-onward proposition. This shortens his correlated receiving props; it doesn't lengthen them.
Cleared doesn't mean featured — the backfield is unallocated
Asked to clarify who was included, Quinn gave two words: "Everyone's cleared." That covers Jacory Croskey-Merritt. Good news. Now note what never happened: across a full session touching the pass game, the red zone, the line, and roster construction, Quinn never once described a running back's role.
Croskey-Merritt's 2025 line — 175 carries, 805 rush yds, 8 TD — reads like a lead back until you divide it. That's 10.3 carries and 47 yards a game. It's an efficiency and short-yardage profile, not a volume one. Rachaad White arrives with 132 carries and 40 receptions, Jeremy McNichols caught 25 balls, and Kaytron Allen is a sixth-round rookie.
Implication: An eight-touch floor with a 15-touch hope, and Quinn gave no signal which. The Week 1 fantasy question isn't whether Croskey-Merritt plays — it's whether he's the goal-line back, and the only evidence is last year's 8 touchdowns on 175 carries. If you drafted him as a volume RB2, you're betting on a role the head coach hasn't described.
McLaurin–Diggs is a "balance," not a hierarchy
On his top two receivers, Quinn said: "We'll feature them in different ways." On Diggs' ripple effect, he pointed to passing "the information to Jalen Lane and Antonio and Luke" — the slot room.
He never named a target leader, and he framed Diggs as still onboarding, with "Jaden and Terry" feeding him system detail. That's a both-featured answer, deliberately so.
Implication: Stefon Diggs (85 rec, 1,013 yds in 17 games) and Terry McLaurin (38 rec, 582 yds in 10 games) are a 1A/1B the coach won't rank, and the slot trio is a rotation behind them — not Week 1 roster material in standard leagues. The question that actually decides their value is red-zone usage, which Quinn spent camp on and then declined to answer.
What to watch
The first offensive series and the Friday practice report: if Gulbin and the interior hold, the Daniels rushing floor is live and Washington is a real Week 1 play. If Oweh opens on a pitch count and the middle leaks, the honest price on this team is the long end of the board — DraftKings' +6500, not FanDuel's +4500.
