Colin Kaepernick is no longer asking the NFL to take him back. In remarks reported Thursday by Pro Football Network and Yahoo Sports, the former quarterback accused the league of targeting players who protested and said he refuses to support the NFL. He used language that goes beyond a grievance.

"The league is actively blackballing me and others who protested," Kaepernick said, according to Yahoo Sports.

The phrasing matters. "Blackballing" describes coordinated exclusion, not a bad market. It says the NFL didn't just move on from Kaepernick. It says the league acted to keep him and other protesters out. Pro Football Network's report additionally said Kaepernick accused the NFL of targeting players who protested. That's a group claim, not a personal one. It turns one man's unemployment into an indictment of how the league treated a movement.

Kaepernick's refusal to support the NFL closes a door. He isn't positioning himself as a comeback candidate. He's positioning himself as an outside observer who will not pretend the league deserves his backing. For years, the question was whether he wanted a job. Now he's answered that question with a no.

The league faces an awkward reality. Any denial of blackballing would require the NFL to explain why he hasn't been signed, and that explanation would almost certainly sound like the same justification that fueled the accusation. Silence cuts the other way. Either way, Kaepernick's words will follow the league into the next labor negotiation and the next conversation about protest.

My read: this isn't a negotiation tactic. It's a verdict. Kaepernick has decided the NFL is the institution that wronged him, and he's going to say so whether the league responds or not. That makes him a thorn the league can't remove.
