Bo Nix completed 17 of 28 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception, fumbled three times, lost one, and finished with a passer rating of 69.2. The Denver Broncos lost 31-10 and fell to 0-1. That is the whole story of this game. Everything else is decoration.
Denver's defense is not why Denver lost. Alex Singleton made 15 tackles. Zach Allen had two sacks, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. That is a front seven that showed up and got rewarded with short fields and short breathers for its trouble, because Nix averaged 4.7 yards per attempt and took four sacks for minus-16. A QBR of 8.3 is not a bad afternoon. It is a forfeiture.
The run game tells you what the Broncos thought of their own passing attack. J.K. Dobbins carried eight times for 36 yards, RJ Harvey three times for 18, Troy Franklin once for five and Nix three times for two. Fifteen carries against 28 throws is a staff that wanted balance and couldn't justify it.
When Nix did throw, the ball went to the tight end and the rookie. Evan Engram caught four passes for 43 yards and Denver's only touchdown. Pat Bryant caught four for 42 on six targets. Courtland Sutton, the receiver this offense is built to feature, got five targets and turned them into two catches for 11 yards. Harvey added four receptions for 23 yards and, with 111 kickoff return yards on four attempts, was the Broncos' most productive player in the return game. Special teams was Denver's best phase. Nobody in that building wants to read that sentence.
Two plays in the fourth quarter sum up the night. With 4:41 left and the game gone, Nix went deep left for Franklin and missed, with Karlaftis in on the rush. Down three scores, throwing deep to a receiver who finished with zero catches on one target. Then, with 0:40 left, Patrick Mahomes kneeled to the Denver 18 for a loss of one. The Chiefs ran out the clock from the Broncos' 18-yard line. It could have been 38-10.
That is the part Kansas City takes home at 1-0. Mahomes led the Chiefs in passing and appears among their rushing leaders. Travis Kelce led the receivers. Kenneth Walker III and Emmett Johnson led the backfield. Nobody posted a spectacular line and it did not matter, because the Chiefs scored 31 points and let Denver cross the goal line once. The formula held without the quarterback having to be the reason.
My verdict: this was a quarterback loss, plainly, and the 21-point margin undersells it. Denver's defense is good enough to keep the Broncos in most games on the schedule, and that is exactly what makes the offensive tape so expensive. If Nix plays to a 69.2 rating again, 0-1 becomes a hole in a division that already has Kansas City sitting in it. The Chiefs, meanwhile, just won by three touchdowns without needing Mahomes to be great, and that is the more frightening of the two numbers.
