RJ Harvey returned four kickoffs for 111 yards Monday night at Arrowhead. That was Denver's most functional offense for long stretches of a 31-10 loss to Kansas City.
Harvey averaged 27.8 yards per return, with a long of 31. He also caught all four of his targets for 23 yards and carried three times for 18. Small sample, no wasted motion. On a night when the Broncos' actual offense kept stalling, the return game was the one place Denver gained ground.
The rest was grim. Bo Nix completed 17 of 28 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked four times for 16 yards in losses, posted a QBR of 8.3 and a passer rating of 69.2, and fumbled three times, losing one. Evan Engram caught four passes for 43 yards and Denver's only touchdown through the air. Courtland Sutton, targeted five times, finished with two catches for 11 yards.
Denver's defense produced more than the final score implies. Alex Singleton made 15 tackles, five of them solo. Zach Allen recorded two sacks, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. Brandon Jones intercepted a pass and returned it 24 yards. Riley Moss broke up a throw. Nix's turnovers took whatever that group earned and gave it back.
This was the 2026 season opener, a divisional game in prime time, and the first real look at where the Broncos sit against the Chiefs.
My verdict: Denver's defense is ahead of its offense, and that gap is the story of this team until proven otherwise. Singleton and Allen can win some ugly games on their own. A QBR of 8.3 cannot. If the sacks and the fumbles follow Nix into Week 2, the Broncos will burn a defensive effort they won't be able to repeat every Sunday. Kansas City didn't teach Denver anything new about the Chiefs. It taught Denver something about itself.
