Cam Skattebo didn't ease back into the job. He took it.
The Giants handed him the feature back role in Week 1 against Dallas, and the bruising back dominated the field in a win over the Cowboys to open the season, per ESPN. The framing is that it's business as usual again. Fine. The more revealing decision is that New York gave him that workload at all, fresh off an injury recovery.
Teams almost always manage returning players. They ration carries, protect them in pass protection, work them in over a month. The Giants did the opposite with the one back on the roster whose game is built on contact. That tells you what the coaching staff thinks of its alternatives.
Here's where I'll part with the consensus. The celebration of Skattebo's Week 1 is about the player. The story is about the plan. A back who finishes runs through defenders absorbs hits a scatback never sees, and the feature role multiplies them. New York just bet that his physical edge is worth the availability risk, in September, with four months still to play.
That's not a knock on Skattebo. It's the reason the role matters. If he holds it, the Giants' offense has a spine and a back who can kill a clock in the fourth quarter. If he doesn't, New York is back to committee football and a coordinator explaining why his best runner is standing on the sideline in street clothes.
One week doesn't answer that. The depth chart does, for now.
Skattebo is the Giants' back until his body says otherwise. My call: he won't carry this workload through all 17 games, and the Giants should be building a second option before they need one. I'd be glad to be wrong about that. I just don't think the Week 1 headline is where the risk lives.
