The Giants' worst fear is now a fact: wide receiver Calvin Austin III is out for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

The injury happened Tuesday during training camp practice, on a route. A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Austin will miss the upcoming season. NBC New York reported that Austin was carted off the field after appearing to injure his right knee—a non-contact injury, per AOL.

Austin was in his first camp with the Giants, having signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract. He had been having an impressive camp, enough that the New York Post reports Odell Beckham Jr. could potentially start in Week 1 in his place.

Here is where the "opportunity" narrative comes in. Beckham gets a shot. Austin's loss is his gain. But look closer.

The Giants bet $1.5 million on a veteran with a strong camp, and that was their depth. Now they are one injury deep: the next man up is a player who wasn't expected to start. That is not a receiving corps with answers. That is a receiving corps with hopes.

The structural problem here isn't Austin's knee. It's the roster that turned a non-contact practice injury into a season-defining crisis. If the Giants were truly deep at wide receiver, this would be a footnote. Instead, it's a headline.

Austin's surgery and rehab are ahead. The Giants have to decide whether Beckham is the answer or whether they need to add another receiver. Either way, the season is still ahead. But the margin for error just disappeared.

The real takeaway: you don't lose a season because one receiver goes down. You lose a season because you had no one else ready. That is the problem this injury exposes.
