Chicago 59, Carolina 37 reads like Caleb Williams arriving. It was the ground game that arrived.
Williams was very good, and the line is real: 21-of-29 for 269 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, a 124.1 passer rating. Here's the number that matters more. He ran it 10 times for 65 yards and two scores. D'Andre Swift ran 18 times for 124 yards and three. A quarterback averaging 9.3 yards an attempt on 29 attempts didn't need to throw more, because Carolina had no answer for anything on the ground.
Swift's fantasy box is going to be the most expensive thing in your league next week. It shouldn't be. Kyle Monangai took 10 carries for 100 yards with a 61-yard long, a 10.0 average, and he drew 2 targets to Swift's 1. Chicago doesn't have to choose between those two backs, and on this evidence it won't.
The passing distribution is a bigger mess than the score suggests. Kalif Raymond led the Bears with 9 targets and caught 8 for 84 yards. Luther Burden III caught all 5 of his for 63 and lost a fumble. Rome Odunze saw 3 targets, turned them into 52 yards, 47 of it on one play. Colston Loveland was targeted twice and caught nothing. Cole Kmet caught 2 for 35 and a touchdown. Jahdae Walker caught 1 for 1 yard and a touchdown. Williams spread it around because the game let him, not because he's settled on anybody. Someone has to separate before any of them is startable with confidence.
Carolina's 37 is the more interesting number, and not in a good way. Both Bryce Young and Kenny Pickett appear among the Panthers' passing leaders. Pickett also shows up among the rushing leaders, alongside Chuba Hubbard and AJ Dillon. One game with two quarterbacks in the passing column isn't depth. It's an offense that hasn't decided what it is, and a 37-point afternoon from a group like that can't be projected forward until it does.
The final minutes told it. Bryce Young hit J. Coker for an 8-yard touchdown at the 4:00 mark, Carolina's best moment of the quarter, and D. Odeyingbo blocked the extra point. Twenty seconds later Swift went 28 yards for the dagger and C. Santos knocked through the extra point.
Chicago is 1-0 and Carolina is 0-1, and only one of those records comes with anything solved. The Bears' defense gave up 37 and needed 10 tackles from Dillon Thieneman and 9 from Tyrique Stevenson Sr., with Devin Bush recovering a fumble. A 22-point win that requires that much tackling is a win with a warning attached.
I'm buying Swift's touchdown role and refusing to pay for his workload, because Monangai is going to take a bite out of it. I'm fading the Bears' receivers until the target order repeats itself once. And I'm treating Carolina's 37 like what it is: a number that looks worse every week nobody fixes the quarterback room.
