Minnesota's pass rush did more than hold Chicago to three points. It may have taken the Bears' quarterback with it.
Dallas Turner posted two sacks, four quarterback hits and two tackles for loss in the Vikings' 9-3 win. Blake Cashman added 10 tackles and a sack. Byron Murphy Jr. intercepted a pass, and Isaiah Rodgers recovered a fumble. Chicago managed one field goal against a defense that never let the pocket hold.
The bill came due Monday afternoon. Caleb Williams has a right hamstring injury from that loss and is week-to-week, Bears coach Ben Johnson said. He has not been ruled out for Monday Night Football, though Johnson said Williams "will likely miss some time," per CBS News Chicago. Yahoo reported he avoided a serious injury.
Read those two things together, because the order matters. Week-to-week is a schedule, not a diagnosis. Not ruled out is what a coach says when the imaging came back cleaner than the hit suggested.
My call: Williams does not play Monday. A quarterback whose value is half rushing can't protect a hamstring he needs to run on, and Chicago has no reason to hurry him back into an offense that just produced three points. Fantasy managers should plan for the backup, whoever takes the snaps, and downgrade Chicago's receivers either way. If Williams is somehow active, he's a fade. A hobbled version of him is a pocket passer on a bad team, which is the one version of Williams that has never been worth starting.
Minnesota's side is cleaner. Carson Wentz completed 11 of 20 passes for 143 yards, no touchdowns and a 31.5 QBR, and the Vikings won anyway because Aaron Jones Sr. carried 23 times for 105 yards. That's the blueprint now: hand it to Jones, let Turner and Cashman hunt. Turner's four quarterback hits say more about Minnesota's defensive ceiling than the final score does.
Chicago's week is now about a medical report. The Vikings already know what they are.
I'll take the under on Williams playing Monday, and I'd hold that position even if Johnson keeps the door open all week.
