BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns' 2026 draft class encountered a notable medical update Friday when receiver KC Concepcion, the team's No. 24 overall pick, publicly confirmed that he underwent an arthroscopic knee surgery on March 12. This disclosure, made during his introductory press conference at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, clarifies a procedure that was not previously detailed during pre-draft reports.
Concepcion described the surgery as a "minor scope" aimed at cleaning up loose bodies in his right knee, an issue that had developed late in the 2025 college season at Texas A&M. The procedure was performed in Dallas by Dr. Dan Cooper, a respected orthopedic surgeon with extensive NFL experience.
"I just wanted to get it taken care of before the next level," Concepcion stated. "It wasn't anything major. I was playing through it for a few weeks, and it just wasn't getting better on its own. The doctors said a scope was the best way to fix it. I'm already feeling much better."
He emphasized that the surgery was elective and not prompted by a new injury, confirming the knee problem began during practice in late October 2025 and continued through the last four games of the Aggies' season. Despite the discomfort, Concepcion appeared in all 12 games last year, posting 74 catches for 1,026 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Browns' medical personnel were informed of the surgery during pre-draft medical evaluations, according to a team representative. The team remained confident in their decision to select Concepcion with the 24th overall pick, a choice acquired after trading down from the ninth spot earlier in the draft.
Concepcion reported that his recovery has progressed smoothly. Currently, he is in the early rehabilitation phase focused on regaining range of motion and strengthening. He expects to be fully cleared for training camp, which opens in late July.
"It's going to be a full-go by the time we get to camp," he said. "I'm not trying to rush anything, but I know my timeline. I'll be ready to contribute when the season starts."
The Browns' wide receiver group is undergoing changes ahead of the 2026 season. After trading veteran Amari Cooper mid-2024 season, Jerry Jeudy has served as the clear WR1, and the addition of Concepcion injects a versatile slot presence capable of lining up outside as well.
At the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, Concepcion measured 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds, clocking a 4.45-second 40-yard dash. Scouts praise his agility and precise route-running, often comparing him to a more robust version of former NFL slot star Julian Edelman.
This selection was part of an offensive renovation masterminded by general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Todd Monken. The Browns also added Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano with the ninth overall pick, acquired via trade-down with the New York Giants. Fano is anticipated to compete immediately for the starting left tackle role.
The revelation about Concepcion's knee surgery underscores the Browns' cautious approach to player health. The medical staff, led by the head athletic trainer, is known for measured recovery protocols. Concepcion's minor surgery will limit his participation in the spring portion of the offseason program.
Offseason program components such as Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp begin in May and June, where Concepcion is expected to be restricted to individual drills, postponing full-team activities until training camp opens July 23 at the team's Berea facility.
"We're not going to push him," Monken said. "He's a young player with a long career ahead. If the medical team advises a gradual ramp-up, that's the path we'll follow. The priority is having him healthy come September."
From a roster standpoint, the Browns have depth at wide receiver allowing flexibility in Concepcion's recovery timeline. Jeudy remains the primary target, alongside veteran Elijah Moore and 2024 third-round pick Cedric Tillman. Earlier this offseason, the Browns also signed Tyler Boyd to a one-year contract, bolstering the slot receiver corps.
Concepcion has discussed his offensive role with Travis Switzer, the team's offensive coordinator, and Mike Rutenberg, the wide receivers coach.
"They have a plan for me," Concepcion said. "I've studied the offense and believe it's a good fit. They want to get the ball in my hands quickly and let me make plays after the catch. That's my strength."
The Browns drafted Concepcion with expectations that he would provide an immediate impact as a rookie. His slot versatility, route precision, and run-after-catch ability address specific needs within Cleveland's West Coast offense. This update follows another positive medical report from the Browns' 2026 draft class. On Thursday, the team confirmed that Fano's medical clearance is complete and he is expected to contend immediately at left tackle.
Concepcion is optimistic about his knee's long-term health.
"A lot of people have asked me about it," he said. "It's really no big deal. I've faced tougher situations before. I'm focused on getting better every day and helping the team win."
The Browns kick off their 2026 regular season on September 10 at home against the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Concepcion named that date as a key milestone.
