Grady Jarrett gave Tyson Bagent the strongest public endorsement a backup can get — and gave away nothing about how long Caleb Williams is out. That combination is the entire read: the locker room has already picked its quarterback, and the market has no timeline to price against.
The endorsement is real, and it's for Bagent — not Keenum.
"There's a reason why he was able to get an extension here," Jarrett said. That sentence does more work than the praise around it. Jarrett's case for Bagent rests on institutional commitment and weekly preparation, not on anything Bagent has done in a regular-season game. The number: Bagent's 2025 line is 3 games, 3-of-4, 47 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT. Four attempts. That is not a sample you project from — it's a cameo. The depth chart meanwhile carries Case Keenum in year 14 and Miller Moss at No. 16.
Jarrett's phrasing — "We love Tyson. And we believe in Tyson" — plus "nobody flinched when we knew he had the opportunity" is the clearest public signal available that the QB2 pecking order is settled rather than a competition. That matters because it removes the one variable that would have made this unprojectable: a two-man battle for practice reps.

Build the hierarchy from scratch rather than shading it. Under Williams in Week 1, the distribution was Kalif Raymond 8-84, Luther Burden III 5-63, Rome Odunze 2-52 — with Colston Loveland at zero targets and Cole Kmet at 2-35 and a score. That's a Williams-shaped target tree. A quarterback with four attempts of 2025 tape in this offense is not a downgrade you can quantify, which is exactly why the market will overreact in both directions.
Jarrett answers the injury question three times and says nothing.
"You never want to see any teammate go down." "I guess we'll hear it more soon." "However it go." That is the pattern when a locker room hasn't been handed a diagnosis — not the pattern when a starter is day-to-day. If Williams had a clean timeline, the defensive captain wouldn't be telling reporters he'll find out later, and he wouldn't hedge the QB plan with "however it go."
The concrete implication: Wednesday's practice report is the tradeable event. Until an injury designation exists, the only exposed number on the board is the Super Bowl future — +2500 at FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers and BetOnline. Identical prices across four books is not a market that has processed a starting-QB injury; it's a 17-game availability bet that hasn't been asked the question yet.
"It's just show that he's human. He's Superman."
That's Jarrett on Williams, after a reporter noted how many hits he has absorbed. It's the least defensive thing a defensive tackle can say about his own quarterback. Williams' fantasy case has quietly leaned on volume and rushing — the assumption that he eats the contact and keeps playing. Jarrett just told you that assumption isn't free.
Where the volume goes if Bagent starts: the ground. Week 1 is the template — D'Andre Swift 124 rush yards and 3 touchdowns, Kyle Monangai 100 rush yards and a score, 224 combined. The rainy, 12-point Week 2 that Jarrett described as "a lot of run plays" forced the run on both teams; a backup quarterback forces it on one. Swift and Monangai are the two Bears whose roles expand. Odunze and Burden are the two whose ceilings compress.
Watch Wednesday: if Bagent takes first-team reps and Williams carries no designation, the +2500 is stale and the Swift/Monangai workload — not the passing game — is the only Bears asset worth acting on before kickoff.
