Ravens rookie Ja'Kobi Lane to have wrist surgery, out at least a month
Baltimore will be without rookie wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane for at least a month. Lane fractured his wrist in the Ravens' season-opening win over the Colts, according to Yahoo Sports, and will undergo surgery. ESPN reported the absence could run longer than that initial month.
The Week 1 usage says the short-term hit is smaller than the injury news implies. Lane drew three targets against Indianapolis, third-most on the team, and caught one for 11 yards. He was carving out a role, not occupying one.
Baltimore's distribution was flat-out concentrated. Zay Flowers took six targets for five catches, 150 yards and a score, a 30.0 yards-per-catch average. Mark Andrews also saw six targets and turned them into four catches for 49 yards. Chris Moore's lone reception went 53 yards. Lamar Jackson threw 25 times for 324 yards on 17-of-25. Derrick Henry carried 24 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns, and the Ravens finished the afternoon with 37 called runs against those 25 passes.
That run-heavy, top-heavy profile is why I don't expect Baltimore to add a veteran receiver this week. Lane's three targets represent 12 percent of the Week 1 passing volume, and the players behind him already have defined jobs. LaJohntay Wester handled three punt returns and a kickoff in the opener. Moore is on the roster and producing in a limited role.
The real cost is developmental. A rookie receiver who needs reps to earn trust from the staff just lost the month that builds it, and there is no shortcut back. Baltimore's receiver room is also thinner than it looks: Rashod Bateman drew one target and finished with zero catches in Week 1, and ESPN reported in August that the NFL was reviewing him over a family violence arrest.
If Bateman's availability is compromised at any point during Lane's absence, the Ravens' third-receiver job is genuinely open. My read: they ride Flowers and Andrews harder, lean further into Henry, and let Wester and Moore absorb the snaps rather than sign anyone. That works for a month. It does not work if Lane's timeline slips past it.
