As of Wednesday, the Falcons still had not announced a starting quarterback for the season opener. General manager Ian Cunningham says that's because the decision will be a group effort. The admission doesn't sound like a coach with a clear favorite. It sounds like a front office and coaching staff genuinely weighing options.
Cunningham said selecting the starter will be collaborative, per ESPN. That's meaningful. Most teams let the head coach own that call and the GM moves on. When a GM explicitly frames it as a group project, it tells you the answer isn't obvious to the people making it.
The delay matters for football reasons. Skill players need reps with one quarterback. The offensive line needs to hear one voice at the line. Every extra day of a split room is a day the starting unit spends practicing with two different snap counts and cadences. That usually shows up early in the season as miscommunication.
There is a potential upside. If the Falcons face a Week 1 opponent, that staff now has to prepare for two quarterbacks instead of one. Opposing coaches will spend practice time on two different throwing styles and mobility profiles. That's a real advantage, and sometimes a team with a messy QB situation will intentionally stay quiet to force it.
But the calendar is the enemy. The opener is close. At some point the Falcons have to commit, because players need to know which guy is leading the huddle before the plane ride to the opening game. Uncertainty fades as a weapon and becomes a liability the closer you get to kickoff.
My read: Cunningham's "group effort" comment is the surest sign yet this is a genuinely open competition, not a procedural delay. The Falcons are taking every day they have to choose. That's understandable. It's also a bet that the value of getting the call right outweighs the cost of making it late. By game day, they'll have to cash that bet either way.
