The Falcons are handing the offense back to Michael Penix Jr., and they're doing it on a short week.
ESPN confirmed Penix will start Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers. Yahoo Sports was blunter about the why: Atlanta had seen enough of Cooper Rush. Two weeks into the season, the quarterback the Falcons had settled on is out, and the one they moved away from is back in.
Any midweek change is a statement. Making it before a Thursday kickoff is an admission that the first version was never going to work.
The backdrop doesn't help. In Atlanta's Week 2 meeting with Carolina, Bryce Young threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, and Tetairoa McMillan drew 10 targets for 101 yards. That's a defense getting carved up, and the Falcons' answer is to change the guy taking snaps on the other side of the ball. 2025 was the final season for general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris, so a first-year staff is making a Week 3 call on the job that defines the whole roster build.
For fantasy, the move matters more for Atlanta's pass-catchers than for anyone streaming quarterbacks. A Thursday game with a swapped starter is not a buy-low window. It's a week to keep Atlanta's skill players on the bench in season-long leagues and to fade the passing game in DFS, because three days of prep is not enough time to fix route timing with a quarterback who wasn't taking first-team reps. Green Bay's defense becomes one of the better plays on the slate almost by default, and I'd rather roster that side than chase Penix's upside in a GPP.
Penix also gets the Packers on a night when the offensive line has had no time to adjust protections for a different cadence and a different release point. Expect heavy personnel, quick throws, and a low team total.
My call: this is a prove-it stretch, not a coronation. Penix keeps the job the rest of the way because Atlanta has nothing better behind him, and the Falcons are still drafting a quarterback in April.
