Atlanta scored 45 points and Michael Penix Jr. threw the ball 20 times. That's the whole game right there, and it's the line fantasy managers will misread all week.
The Falcons beat the Saints 45-24, moved to 2-2, and dropped New Orleans to 1-3 by handing the ball to their backs and letting a team with one win throw its way into a blowout. Bijan Robinson ran 19 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns, 7.6 a carry, long of 59. Brian Robinson Jr. ran 14 times for 62 yards and scored three times. Sit with that last number. Three rushing scores on 62 yards is a goal-line role doing all the work, and it decided more of this game than anything Penix did.
Penix was excellent on the small menu he was given: 15 of 20 for 223 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, 11.2 per attempt, a 127.7 rating. Efficient. Also 20 attempts, which caps what every Atlanta pass catcher can be. Drake London caught 5 of 6 targets for 96 yards, 19.2 a catch, long of 37. Jahan Dotson turned 3 targets into 2 catches for 54 yards and a score, 27.0 a grab. Kyle Pitts Sr. had 3 for 47. Good per-target work, low target volume.
The Saints' 24 points are the mirage. Tyler Shough threw 48 times for 286 yards, 30 completions, one touchdown, no interceptions, 6.0 a throw and a rating of 85.9. That's an offense that quit running: Alvin Kamara got 7 carries for 23 yards and still scored twice, at 3.3 a carry with a long of 5. When the lead back finishes with 23 rushing yards and two touchdowns, both scores came from short yardage and the yardage came from Shough's arm because the game was already gone.
Chris Olave is the one Saint worth the price. Twelve targets, 8 catches, 116 yards, 14.5 per reception, long of 44. The volume is real and it isn't going anywhere at 1-3. But look at the shape of it. One 44-yard grab on a day the Saints threw 48 times, and everything else was underneath work against a defense sitting on a lead.
The turning point was Atlanta's, and it was a handoff. Bijan Robinson went left guard for 11 yards and a touchdown at 6:52 of the fourth. The Saints answered with a 3-yard Shough pass to Devaughn Vele at 1:13, which was the last score of the game and changed nothing. Zachariah Branch added 3 kick returns for 65 yards and a 25-yard punt return in the margins.
My read: the 45 belongs to the backfield, not the quarterback. Penix threw 20 times because Atlanta never needed him to throw more, and that is a weekly ceiling on London and the rest of the receiving room that the market will ignore after a 45-point afternoon. Brian Robinson Jr. is the buy. Not because 62 yards is good, but because three touchdowns on 14 carries tells you exactly where this staff wants the ball near the goal line, and that role doesn't disappear when the yardage does. Bijan Robinson is the obvious start; Brian Robinson Jr. is the one that wins you a week nobody else saw coming.
