Recurrences in the hip/groin region matter disproportionately for a specialist whose entire job is a repeating, high-torque rotational motion; there's no rotation to hide behind and no snap count to manage. The hedge wasn't on the diagnosis, it was on the week: three consecutive DNPs is the tell, not the designation.
The concrete read: Pineiro's 2025 line — 28-of-29 on field goals (96.6%) and 118 points in 14 games — is a career outlier the market may still be treating as a constant. It isn't a constant. If he's inactive, everything downstream reprices: the 49ers' red-zone behavior, any kicking props, and the team total's assumption that drives stall into three points.
"Two guys we're deciding on" isn't two rostered kickers
Read that line carefully. Shanahan's "two" refers to the practice-squad candidates he's choosing between, not two kickers on the 53. The relevant fact is structural: San Francisco doesn't have a spare kicker in-house on a Friday, which is why the reporter's "just in case" question got an immediate "yes." Whoever kicks Sunday will have had, at most, a walkthrough in this building.
