George Kittle is not just back on the roster. He is back in the 49ers' plans for Week One. The team activated the tight end from the physically unable to perform list, according to ESPN and Yahoo Sports, and the only remaining question is how much he will play.

That is a significant development for a franchise that has long built its offense around the tight end position. Brent Jones did it in the 1980s. Vernon Davis did it in the 2000s. Kittle continues that tradition, and his return gives the 49ers a middle-of-the-field threat that defenses must respect.

The timing of the activation suggests Kittle will be on the field in the season opener. The 49ers have not announced a snap count, but they would not have made this move if they did not expect him to contribute. Look for Kittle to be eased in, likely on third downs and in the red zone.

For the 49ers, that is enough. Kittle's presence alone changes the math for their offense. He makes the safeties choose, and that is exactly the kind of advantage San Francisco needs to open the season.
