Fifteen games, and the board has a shape. Two totals sit at 53.5 (Detroit at Arizona, Buffalo at Los Angeles) and one sits at 39.5 (Houston at Tennessee). Exactly three favorites are laying a touchdown or more: Dallas at 10, Cincinnati at 7, Houston at 6.5. Every line, total and moneyline below is the ESPN number captured Monday, Oct. 5, a Monday price for a Sunday slate.

I'm fading all three of those big favorites. That's the call the rest of this card hangs on.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys

The line: Dallas Cowboys -10, total 47.5, moneyline Dallas Cowboys -535 / Tampa Bay Buccaneers +400 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: Ten points is the widest spread on the slate and -535 says the market considers the result settled. The implied score is a 10-point Dallas win, which is the number itself. A favorite that big has to win by 11 to pay you, and the market's own projection is a push. Give me the +400 ticket and the cushion. Best bet: Buccaneers +10 Score: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19, Dallas Cowboys 29 Total: Under 47.5

Philadelphia Eagles at Jacksonville Jaguars

The line: Jacksonville Jaguars -4.5, total 43.5, moneyline Jacksonville Jaguars -218 / Philadelphia Eagles +180 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: Jacksonville lays 4.5 at home and the implied score has the Jaguars winning by four, so the hook is the entire bet. -218 is heavy juice for a team the market itself doesn't think wins by five. I'm not paying that price to hand back a half point. Best bet: Eagles +4.5 Score: Philadelphia Eagles 20, Jacksonville Jaguars 24 Total: Under 43.5

Houston Texans at Tennessee Titans

The line: Houston Texans -6.5, total 39.5, moneyline Tennessee Titans +245 / Houston Texans -305 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: The lowest total on the card, and Houston lays 6.5 into it with the implied score giving Tennessee only 16 points. A 39.5 total plus a touchdown spread is a narrow scoring band. A 16-point floor for the underdog leaves the favorite no room for a cheap cover. -305 doesn't discount that enough. Best bet: Titans +6.5 Score: Houston Texans 23, Tennessee Titans 16 Total: Under 39.5

Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers

The line: Chicago Bears -2.5, total 44.5, moneyline Green Bay Packers +120 / Chicago Bears -142 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: A road team favored by 2.5 in Green Bay at -142 against +120 is a wider moneyline gap than the spread implies. The market isn't guessing here. It has decided Chicago is the better team and priced the hook to match. I'll follow the money and take the small number. Best bet: Bears -2.5 Score: Chicago Bears 24, Green Bay Packers 21 Total: Over 44.5

Cincinnati Bengals at Miami Dolphins

The line: Cincinnati Bengals -7, total 41.5, moneyline Miami Dolphins +280 / Cincinnati Bengals -355 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: Seven points and -355 says the market knows the winner. It doesn't say the winner covers. This is one of the lowest totals on the board, and a low-scoring game compresses the margin. Miami doesn't need to win it. One score keeps them inside a touchdown, and +280 is the side of this price I want. Best bet: Dolphins +7 Score: Cincinnati Bengals 24, Miami Dolphins 17 Total: Under 41.5

Las Vegas Raiders at New England Patriots

The line: New England Patriots -3.5, total 44.5, moneyline New England Patriots -198 / Las Vegas Raiders +164 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: New England -3.5 at -198 is the sub-touchdown favorite I'm most willing to lay. It's a home favorite with real juice behind it, and a 44.5 total means points on both sides. That's how a 3.5-point favorite gets home. Taking the hook and paying for it. Best bet: Patriots -3.5 Score: Las Vegas Raiders 20, New England Patriots 24 Total: Over 44.5

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints

The line: Minnesota Vikings -1.5, total 42.5, moneyline New Orleans Saints +105 / Minnesota Vikings -125 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: The tightest moneyline on the slate. Minnesota -125, New Orleans +105. The market is calling this a coin flip and charging you for the privilege. When it's a toss-up I want the plus-money side and the extra half point, not the team the market can't separate from anybody. Best bet: Saints +1.5 Score: Minnesota Vikings 22, New Orleans Saints 20 Total: Under 42.5

Cleveland Browns at New York Jets

The line: New York Jets -1.5, total 40.5, moneyline New York Jets -130 / Cleveland Browns +110 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: The second-lowest total on the board, 40.5, paired with a 1.5-point spread. That's a game built to be decided by a late field goal, and in that game I want the points and the plus money. New York at -130 is charging a favorite's price for a game that has no favorite in it. Best bet: Browns +1.5 Score: Cleveland Browns 20, New York Jets 21 Total: Under 40.5

Indianapolis Colts at Pittsburgh Steelers

The line: Pittsburgh Steelers -2.5, total 44.5, moneyline Pittsburgh Steelers -130 / Indianapolis Colts +110 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: Pittsburgh -2.5 at -130 with a 44.5 total, and that total is doing more work than the spread. A 44.5 number under a sub-field-goal line is the market telling you to expect two teams in the twenties. Lay the 2.5 at home and take the over. Best bet: Steelers -2.5 Score: Indianapolis Colts 21, Pittsburgh Steelers 24 Total: Over 44.5

New York Giants at Washington Commanders

The line: Washington Commanders -3, total 43.5, moneyline Washington Commanders -170 / New York Giants +142 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: A flat three with a -170 moneyline. That is a lot of juice on the one spread that can end in a push, and 43.5 says the market doesn't see a blowout either. Washington has to win by four to beat me. I'd rather hold the three and the plus money than pay -170 for the privilege. Best bet: Giants +3 Score: New York Giants 20, Washington Commanders 23 Total: Over 43.5

Denver Broncos at Los Angeles Chargers

The line: Denver Broncos -3.5, total 42.5, moneyline Los Angeles Chargers +150 / Denver Broncos -180 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: Denver -3.5 on the road at -180 against a +150 home dog. The hook is carrying that price, and a 42.5 total is the market saying this one stays close and stays low. In a close, low game the favorite's margin is likelier to be three than four. Take the points. Best bet: Chargers +3.5 Score: Denver Broncos 23, Los Angeles Chargers 20 Total: Under 42.5

Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals

The line: Detroit Lions -4.5, total 53.5, moneyline Arizona Cardinals +180 / Detroit Lions -218 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: The joint-highest total on the board, and the implied score gives Arizona 24 points in a loss. The market is saying the Cardinals can score and still not stay within 4.5. Both can be true. The 53.5 is the cleaner bet. A small spread with a big total is points, not margin. Best bet: Over 53.5 Score: Detroit Lions 29, Arizona Cardinals 24 Total: Over 53.5

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks

The line: Seattle Seahawks -2.5, total 46.5, moneyline Seattle Seahawks -148 / San Francisco 49ers +124 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: Seattle -2.5 at -148 with a 46.5 total. That's the mismatch I'm playing. The spread says field goal, the total says shootout. When those two disagree I side with the spread and bet the number down. Seattle by a field goal, and under. Best bet: Seahawks -2.5 Score: San Francisco 49ers 22, Seattle Seahawks 24 Total: Under 46.5

Baltimore Ravens at Atlanta Falcons

The line: Baltimore Ravens -3.5, total 46.5, moneyline Atlanta Falcons +170 / Baltimore Ravens -205 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: Baltimore is a road favorite at -205 with Atlanta at +170. That's a steep moneyline for a road team laying only 3.5, and it tells you the market has real belief in the Ravens. Pair it with a 46.5 total and I'll lay the hook and take the over. Best bet: Ravens -3.5 Score: Baltimore Ravens 25, Atlanta Falcons 22 Total: Over 46.5

Buffalo Bills at Los Angeles Rams

The line: Los Angeles Rams -2.5, total 53.5, moneyline Los Angeles Rams -142 / Buffalo Bills +120 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5) The read: The other 53.5, and the implied score has Buffalo at 26 in a loss. A 2.5-point spread with one of the two highest totals on the card is a game the market expects to be close and loud. The Rams at home at -142 are the side I'll hold there. Best bet: Rams -2.5 Score: Buffalo Bills 26, Los Angeles Rams 28 Total: Over 53.5

Here's the grade line. Dallas at 10, Cincinnati at 7 and Houston at 6.5 all fail to cover against the number. That's the thesis, and if two of those three win by more than the spread, this card is backwards and should be read as a fade. My word is on it.
